(Representative image) RANCHI: CPI(ML) national general secretary Deepankar Bhattacharya on Wednesday said that though the country would observe Independence Day on August 15, people do not have freedom of speech and economic independence. He was speaking at the concluding event of the Sankalp Saptah (Resolution Week) held jointly by the CPI(ML) and the Marxist Coordination Committee at Loyala school premises in Ranchi. Both the parties observed Sankalp Saptah from July 21 to July 28. Bhattacharya said that unity among the Left parties was necessary to rid the country of NDA rule. He added that the present state government in Jharkhand must execute policies that are radically different from the previous BJP-led dispensation. ....
CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat RANCHI: CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat on Thursday demanded that the Union government set up a judicial inquiry into the death of social activist Fr Stan Swamy. She said the agitation over the incident would intensify if their demand was ignored. While addressing a ‘Raj Bhawan March’ organised by the CPI, CPI(ML), CPI(M) and the Marxist Coordination Committee (MCC), Karat said Swamy was sent to jail as a part of a conspiracy to suppress the opposition voices. She added that he died due to lack of treatment for his illnesses. Notably, Karat told media persons that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Swamy last October without evidence on the pretext of further investigation but did not question him once till June. Describing Swamy’s custodial death as a criminal act, she said the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), under which Swamy was arrested, should be scrapped. ....
Ranchi: Concerned with the high number of Covid-19 deaths in the state, Left parties on Tuesday demanded setting up of an all-party task force to tackle the problem. In a joint statement, CPI, CPM and CPI(M-L) and MCC said people in the state are panic-stricken because of the severity of the virus during the second wave apart from lack of beds, oxygen and Remdesivir. While Jharkhand is struggling with the pandemic, the central government has left the state to its fate, the statement rued. CPI(M-L) state secretary Janardhan Prasad said, The pandemic has taken a heavy toll on people. A large number of the rural populace is also affected by the viral infection. Under the situation, it is not wise to depend solely on the bureaucracy to handle the pandemic. ....
