When people hear you’re going to Northwestern, they might think you’re going to school in Chicago. The billboards throughout the Chicagoland area that call NU “Chicago’s Big Ten Team” might lead to even more confusion. However, NU is in Evanston, and it’s important to learn about the community you’ll be entering and staying in for. ....
In the wake of Evanston’s election results getting finalized, organizers, electees and residents said they are looking forward to the potential for positive change under new local officials. Candidates campaigned in the most crowded election cycle in decades, school board races featured a prominent push for racial equity and long-entrenched alderpeople were unseated. Many residents said it’s important not to throw in the towel after a long election cycle. Instead, the results can be a springboard for a new season of change. Kristen White, a longtime resident and Evanston/Skokie School District 65 parent, said she believes the election of District 65 board members Soo La Kim, Elisabeth “Biz” Lindsay-Ryan, Joseph “Joey” Hailpern and Donna Wang Su will continue a vision of enacting anti-racist policies. Of the four, Wang Su is the only newcomer to the board. ....
After months of campaigning, and a tumultuous final four weeks leading up to the generals, Evanston’s 2021 municipal elections came to a close Tuesday night. When the dust settled, City Council saw three new aldermen emerge with a potential fourth leading in a race that remains too close to call. As of Wednesday night, the margin of victory in three races is within 100 votes. Candidates in the 1st, 2nd and 8th wards are waiting as remaining mail-in ballots trickle in, votes that could decide the race. Approximately 3,000 mail-in ballots were sent out to residents, and those votes can be postmarked as late as April 6, meaning some may still be in transit. ....
Ald. Peter Braithwaite (2nd) leads challenger Darlene Cannon by just over 100 votes in a 2nd Ward aldermanic race which remains too close to call, according to unofficial election results from the Cook County Clerk’s Office. With all precincts reporting, Braithwaite has received 671 votes, pulling ahead of Cannon with 582. Residents who voted by mail and postmarked their ballots by April 6 will also be counted in the final tally. As a result, complete results will not be available immediately. Braithwaite, an incumbent, was first appointed to the seat in 2011 by former mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl and ran unopposed in 2013 and 2017. Cannon, his opponent, is a third-generation Evanston resident and board member of the Democratic Party of Evanston. ....
