Consult with Indigenous Peoples before Making Decisions That Affect Them, Speaker Tells States, as Permanent Forum Continues Session
Indigenous peoples - guardians of nature - must be consulted before States greenlight development projects, members of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues stressed today, as the body concluded a discussion on its six mandate areas - economic and social development, culture, environment, education, health and human rights.
Phoolman Chaudhary (Nepal) highlighted the need for States to consult with indigenous peoples before making decisions, especially on development projects that affect them. He called for greater attention to the issue of indigenous languages disappearing and urged States to remove hazardous chemicals from indigenous lands. ....

UN Reform Needed to Guarantee Self-Determination
The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) has called for urgent reforms of the United Nations in order for it to guarantee the right to self-determination of peoples. A UNPO submission to the UN Expert Mechanism for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples highlights the failure to sufficiently develop understanding of and mechanisms to protect the right to self-determination, the foundational right of the international system, and shows the negative impact that this has had on indigenous people worldwide. The UNPO s report highlights that, where self-determination is better guaranteed, long-term peace and sustainable development are more likely. As a result, the failure to properly develop and implement the right to self-determination is making the world less sustainable and peaceful. It makes recommendations on how the UN system could be practically reformed in order to better guarantee the right. ....

Women’s Affairs Ministers and authorities from mechanisms for women’s advancement in Latin America and the Caribbean advocated for incorporating a gender perspective into the policies for responding to the pandemic to tackle the multiple forms of violence and inequality that affect women, while also reaffirming their commitment to take all necessary measures to accelerate effective implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and the Regional Gender Agenda in order to contribute to a transformative and sustainable recovery with gender equality.
The representatives participated from Tuesday, February 23 through Thursday, February 25 in the 60th Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in coordination with the United Nation ....
