The foundation of political governance in Nigeria was largely predicated on untruthfulness in attitude, self-denial in policy making, chicanery and fraud in nation-building. Even though the founding fathers of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, etc, are said to have been more forthright in their governance of the country and their regions, there is no disputing the fact that collaboration between and among them was more driven by mutual suspicions regional interests, than by any other factor. In fact, the issue of promotion of Hausa-Fulani interests to the detriment of the interests of others, was raised as far back as 1961 in the Parliament. ....
Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, has been named the new Director of Army Public Relations, (DAPR). The Nigerian Army, which announced his appointment on Thursday, also appointed Major General C.G. Musa as the new Commander for Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East. General Nwachukwu replaces Brigadier General Mohammed Yerima, who was appointed barely five months ago, by the late Chief of Army Staff, (COAS), Lt-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, who died in a plane crash. Until his new appointment and posting, General Nwachukwu, was the acting Director of Defence Information, (DDI), the office he held, having successfully managed the media for the then Operation Lafiya Dole in the North East theatre of operation. ....
By Bola A. Akinterinwa The Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) was first established in 1961 as an independent and non-profit making research institution. The NIIA, as an idea, was conceived by Dr. Kenneth Onwuka Dike, who wanted an institute like the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) in London and like the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. The conception predated Nigeria’s independence on October 1, 1960. As we have noted elsewhere, the cardinal objective of all the founding fathers was self-education and making Nigeria relevant in world affairs, particularly in Africa (vide ”The Problems of the NIIA, ThisDay, 24 May, 1999 and Bola A. Akinterinwa, Nigeria in the World: Issues and Problems for the Sleeping Giant (Lagos: Pumark, 2001, pp. 815-818). ....
