Over the last decade, one of the strengths of Flagler Palm Coast’s vaunted track program has been the excellence in relay events, and it looks like the Class 4A state meet will be no exception.
The Bulldogs’ 4x400 relay team of Vijay Weeden, Brandon Kalasnik, Marcus Freeman and Matt Flint took second place in photo finish fashion May 1 at the Region 1-4A track meet at FPC’s Sal Campanella Memorial Stadium. The foursome ran the final event of the region meet in 3:21.58, and for the second week in a row was nipped at the wire by DeLand, which won in less than a half second at 3:21.24. Lake Mary made it an exciting 3-way finish with a time of 3:21.61
Marcus Freeman had the highest finish from both FPC and Matanzas at the 3A/4A FHSAA track and field state championships on May 7 and 8 at the University of North Florida. Freeman placed seventh in the boys high jump after clearing a height of 1.91m.
FPC s boys 4x400m (Vijay Weedon, Brandon Kalasnik, Marcus Freeman and Matthew Flintgrabbed) relay took eighth overall in a time of 3:23.45.
Jada Williams competed in the girls 1600m, and the 3200m, placing ninth and eleventh respectively. In her first race, Williams ran 5:09.08 to best the school record that she set last week at the 4A Region-1 championships at FPC, lowering it by nearly 3.5 seconds. She also ran 11:16.04 in her second event.
A total of seven athletes will represent FPC at the track and field state championships next weekend after the team had one and three individuals qualify during the 4A Region-1 meet on May 1.
Marcus Freeman, Jada Williams and Candice Schweizer will be the only Bulldogs to compete as an individual, with Freeman finishing fifth in the high jump after clearing 1.92m and Williams qualifying in both the 1600m (5:12.37) and 3200m (11:28.14) races after finishing fourth and third. Williams time in the 1600m was also a new school record.
Schweizer finished seventh in the girls javelin with a throw measured at 28.58m to get an at-large bid to qualify.
