Saugatuck firefighters form union, join IAFF

SAUGATUCK TWP. Firefighters with the Saugatuck Township Fire District voted to form a union last year and are in the process of finalizing a collective-bargaining agreement with the Saugatuck Township Fire District Board and Fire Chief Greg Janik.
According to union president Capt. Mike Betts, the decision to unionize did not come from firefighters dissatisfaction with their pay or their employer.
Instead, Betts said, they primarily wanted to become an active part of the state and international firefighters unions, which provide resources and political advocacy on behalf of firefighters.
They also wanted to protect themselves, their benefits for the future, and to encourage retention of career firefighters in the department. ....

KALAMAZOO, MI A suite of ecological restoration projects is being planned along the Kalamazoo River using settlement funding from companies responsible for contaminating an 80-mile stretch with polychlorinated biphenyls.
State and federal agencies are seeking public input on 14 proposed projects between Kalamazoo and Lake Michigan that would remove dams, improve riparian areas and rehabilitate wildlife habitat harmed by PCB pollution. ....

Whiteford planning bill to ban marijuana billboards in Michigan

LANSING Two state lawmakers, one Republican and one Democrat, plan on introducing legislation that would ban pot shops from being advertised on billboards in Michigan.
The lawmakers, Reps. Mary Whiteford, R-Casco Township, and Abdullah Hammoud, D-Dearborn, will introduce a pair of bills to stop billboards for marijuana dispensaries from popping up once the Michigan House of Representatives returns from its spring break on Tuesday, April 13, FOX 47 first reported.
Whiteford, who represents much of Allegan County, declined an interview with The Sentinel Thursday. An office staff member for Whiteford said the representative was focusing on the state s budget for the upcoming fiscal year. ....
