New Gastrobar Hungry Pal Brings Cocktails And Camaraderie To Soho

The coronavirus and its impact on the food and drink scene around the world is old news at this point, yet among the doom and gloom are some promising stories of reinvention. Among them is Hungry Pal, a gastrobar now soft opening on Lower Elgin Street and founded on the friendship between three industry veterans who decided to strike out on their own.
Styling itself as an elevated dive bar , the institution is the brainchild of Bikal Ghale, Ashok Lama and Ganga Gurung, all of whom cut their teeth both front and back of house at restaurants like Carbone, Veda and Buenos Aires Polo Club. The concept takes after American dining tradition of the early 20th century, although the food menu itself is hearty and decidedly international: highlights include a kingfish crudo with citrus and wasabi, grilled octopus with romesco, squash and mixed cress, and Caprese salad with burrata, heirloom tomatoes and yuzu pearls. ....

Like a striptease in reverse, the scantily clad Soho club The Windmill - which became famous for its shocking tableaux of nude women in the 1930s, and for staying open all through the Second World War - is now looking to add some layers of clothing and rebrand as a theatre.
On Thursday, Westminster city council will discuss plans to restore the building. According to the Times, the owners of the lap-dancing club, Immerse London, have spent £7 million transforming it into a 250-seat auditorium and 100-seat theatre lounge, and are planning a new cabaret called Revudeville inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream. ....

Belon 2.0: Head Chef Matthew Kirkley On Keeping The Restaurant 'Fancy, Not Formal'

On Poultry and Seafood
I ve always kind of been a Francophile by nature, but I have a particular penchant for seafood. That s kind of where my heart lies: Chesapeake Bay and blue crabs. I wouldn t say it s done with any great degree of sophistication, but really, really awesome food kind of rarely is anyways, right? It s the simplest stuff it s just the best. My deathbed meal is just a big bushel of blue crabs with Old Bay seasoning on them on a picnic bench. I find seafood to be endlessly interesting, cooking-wise.
That being said, it s fun to be back into a decidedly French restaurant, particularly with birds. Actually, that s kind of my second love pigeons and chickens and ducks, and the kind of classical repertoire and the technique involved with that. When you re here in Hong Kong, the birds are just such an amazing quality here; the chickens are night and day better than what I m used to in the States. ....

'The Real World Homecoming: New York' Reunion Starts Polite: TV Review

The Real World Homecoming: New York Reunion Starts Polite: TV Review

In 1992, MTV premiered a documentary series about seven young adults they’d cast to share a loft in New York City and who, as the intro promised, would “have their lives taped to find out what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real.” They wouldn’t compete in games for control of the apartment; they weren’t forbidden from leaving it; they weren’t shut in with their partners to work on their relationships; no one would get voted out at the end of each episode. None of the usual reality formats applied because there weren’t any; “The Real World” was the first exemplar of a new genre that would, over that decade, continue to grow until it eventually dominated the TV landscape for most of the ’00s (and continues to crowd out all other programming on MTV to this day). If we had no idea then what impact ....
