SOWELA Technical Community College to host Spring Commencement SOWELA and last updated 2021-05-25 09:57:01-04 SOWELA Technical Community College will host two commencement ceremonies on Wednesday, May 26, and Thursday, May 27, at 6 p.m. in the Lake Charles Civic Center Coliseum. The community college says the events are the first in-person graduation ceremonies since COVID-19 began and hurricanes Laura and Delta. Approximately 227 students are eligible to graduate and receive degrees for Spring 2021. The commencement speaker for both ceremonies is Mr. Gray Stream. Stream is currently the president and treasurer of CKX Lands, Inc. Commencement will include graduates from Spring 2020, Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. ....

The event will take place from 9:00 am to 11:00 a.m. in the Sycamore Student Center. The College says that more than 40 organizations will be on hand for this yearâs fair, along with four-year university representatives and several branches of the military. They say participating employers are actively hiring for a variety of positions. âThe Career Fair is a great opportunity for our current students and alumni to learn more about career fields, job prospects, and network with potential employers. (KPLC) -Around 50 thousand miles of pipelines stretch across Louisiana, with many intersecting in Southwest Louisiana. The TC Energy Pipeline Academy at SOWELA, the only one of its kind in the state, is providing industry knowledge to those entering the workforce and those looking to expand their skill sets. “If you look at the existing aging workforce, and the increase of natural gas coming into Southwest Louisiana because of the LNG terminals, there is expected to be a huge demand in the industry,” says Mitchell Heuring, program coordinator. ....
SOWELA to offer construction training course SOWELA and last updated 2021-03-04 12:43:03-05 SOWELA Technical Community College will offer a two-week Introduction to Construction class starting Monday, March 15, at its Main Campus in Lake Charles. The curriculum, according to SOWELA, will include the National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) Core and OSHA 10. A $50 course fee is required but the college says students will receive a $750 stipend for successful completion of all assignments and testing at the end of the course. The entry-level construction skills course will cover safety principles; construction math principles and application; introduction to hand and power tools; how to read and understand construction drawings; introduction to rigging slings, hoists, hitches and other hardware; procedures and techniques for proper material handling; and basic communication and employability skills. ....
