Kolkata: The city is used to seeing Wellington Square buzzing with people seeking to chance upon some of the best deals on sweaters and jackets at the multiple shops set up by Tibetans coming down from the Sikkim hills, north Bengal, Nepal and Tibet itself.
But the Tibetans have not come this time. Their decision to not visit the city was taken in September, they say. When Rana Pratap Dey called one of them, they said they will not be coming this time because of the pandemic, he told the Times of India. On multiple occasions Doma Bhutia was called foreigner and Chinese during her visit here, she said, racial discrimination being another big reason for them not visiting. ....
