Province provides $10 million to support Avalanche Canada SHARE ON: Avalanche Canada is getting $10 million from the province to help spread the word about avalanche awareness. About 75 percent of all Canadian avalanche deaths happen in B.C., and about 90 percent of Avalanche Canada’s services are delivered in this province. The province says the grant will allow Avalanche Canada to expand its regional forecasts to underserved regions in B.C., increase its delivery of avalanche safety training for youth, and provide more programs for outdoor enthusiasts. Solicitor general Mike Farnworth says Avalanche Canada has been advocating for funding certainty for a number of years, “and this grant responds to that need.” ....

COURTENAY, B.C. A woman is in hospital in Vancouver after she was buried alive in an avalanche Sunday in the Mount Apps area of central Vancouver Island. According to Comox Valley Search and Rescue leader Paul Berry, his team members were contacted for a request for assistance from BC Ambulance to evacuate a woman who had been trapped in a size-two avalanche while touring the Brooks Range, north of Mount Apps. “ Size two is a descriptor used in the avalanche community – it’s large enough to fully bury an individual and in this case that is exactly what happened,” Berry says. ....
COURTENAY, B.C. A large-scale effort to locate a woman along the Courtenay River wrapped up successfully Sunday night after the person was located far from the water. RCMP contacted members of the Comox Valley Search and Rescue team around 4:15 p.m. with the belief that a woman may have gone into the river near the Condensory Road Bridge. RCMP members, a helicopter and police service dogs were all involved in the search, as were volunteer searchers who went in the water and along the shorelines. All teams were dispatched, swift water teams, our boat teams, ground teams, dog teams, says Comox Valley Search and Rescue leader Paul Berry. ....
