A news crew with NBC Bay Area was on the ground in San Francisco s SoMa neighborhood Saturday evening.
Then, two individuals in a Lexus pulled up, San Francisco police said, claiming to brandish a weapon underneath their clothes. They demanded the crew hand off their cameras and sped off. None of the crew members were injured.
Authorities were then able to locate the car involved in the robbery the news crew had saved the license plate number and detained two individuals inside, a 20-year-old and and a 15-year-old boy. They were released at the scene, pending a police investigation. ....

Although San Francisco nightlife is very much on pause due to the pandemic, it s still possible to look ahead and see green shoots for the city s LGBTQ+ community.
Supervisor Matt Haney wants to create a nightlife recovery fund to ensure that independent venues survive, for one. There may yet be a more targeted federal stimulus. And San Francisco may establish a new city-sanctioned office: that of drag laureate.
As the Bay Area Reporter noted, the idea was one of many in S.F.’s “LGBTQ+ Cultural Heritage Strategy,” a 2018 report that was revised in August amid nightlife’s pandemic near-extinction. The idea of creating another high-profile city position to advocate for queer culture and nightlife seems logical enough, although it may have detractors among fiscal hawks. ....

San Francisco saw nearly three times as many people die from drug overdoses than from the coronavirus last year, a staggering data point that highlights the city s dire drug epidemic fueled by the powerful painkiller fentanyl.
A record 699 people died of overdoses from January through December in 2020, according to a new report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. This number may seem surprising amid the global COVID-19 pandemic when San Francisco has shuttered schools and businesses to prevent deaths. In S.F., 235 people passed away from complications of the coronavirus in 2020. ....
