Meet the illustrator Dian Liang whose work hopes to be like “a pill for therapy” The Shanghai-based artist and illustrator talks us through her psychological works that hope to touch the viewer’s heart. Words We’ve never seen anything quite like the work of artist and illustrator 梁 电, Dian Liang. Born in a town called Wuxi near Shanghai, a town known for its beautiful scenes of Lake Tai, Dian recalls her early years filled with popular culture that many other 90s kids will be familiar with. Teletubbies, The Simpsons, comic books, manga, Windows 98 computers (where Dian would play Resident Evil 2) all these things would go onto inform Dian’s unique artistic style. She tells us, “like with a lot of kids, animation, comics and games were my whole world – so it became natural for me to live and I preferred to live inside a fantasy.” ....
Soul (Pixar), the Best Animated Feature Oscar has now gone to alumni of the California Institute of the Arts’ (CalArts) renowned animation programs 12 times. Since the category was introduced at the Academy Awards 20 years ago, the majority of winning films have been directed by “CalArtians.” Soul (Pixar) was directed by Pete Docter (Film/Video BFA 90) with co-director Kemp Powers. Docter, who also wrote the film with Powers and Mike Jones, took home trophies with producer Dana Murray. Soul marks Docter’s third Oscar, having won for Pixar classics Up and Inside Out. When accepting the award, Docter said, “We want to thank music teachers and art teachers everywhere… You make the world a better place.” ....
April 1, 2021 Miwa Matreyek, “Infinitely Yours” In April, the “Transforming Crisis” series will host three public virtual events, featuring Fine Arts Center artist-in-residence, Miwa Matreyek. The series a semester-long series hosted in collaboration with UMass Fine Arts Center (FAC), the Master of Fine Arts for Poets and Writers (MFA) and the School of Earth and Sustainability (SES). It is devoted to illuminating ecological crises and addressing climate injustice. With support from the Chancellor s Sustainability Advisory Committee, the series includes performances, readings and discussions with prominent scholars, scientists and artists, along with students and community members about pressing environmental issues, promising solutions and the power of creative arts to inspire collective action. ....
Animator JiHee Nam talks about finding her style and working for herself The CalArts graduate discusses her latest short film, her creative process, and the challenges she’s faced so far in the industry 13/01/2021 8:36 am JiHee Nam is an animator and motion graphic designer currently based in LA, who says that when she first saw an animated film she couldn’t believe that these other worlds could be created. “It intrigued me that the subjects were able to do things that I wasn’t able to do in my world such as dynamic movements, or falling off a cliff,” she says. “I think that was the moment I realised that I wanted to be a part of whatever was going on inside that world.” ....
