Tourism rebound to be 'slower than we want'

By YOURI KEMP

A senior tourism executive yesterday warned that The Bahamas rebound will be slower than we want it to be despite Atlantis moving to expand its re-opening with The Cove s February 11 return.
Fred Lounsberry, the Nassau/Paradise Island Promotion Board s president, said Baha Mar s return yesterday - along with Atlantis expanding its re-opening through The Cove - was what all industry stakeholders have been waiting for over the past nine months.
He said: “We need all of our properties open. I know it s been a slow, slow process, but Baha Mar is a great addition. Sandals will be a great addition when they open in January. It all adds up. It s all important that we have that critical mass of properties, with a wide variety of properties.” ....

New hotel chief eyes 'reset button' in 2021

[email protected]
The incoming Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) president yesterday said the industry plans to hit the “reset button” for 2021 after a year that was devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Robert Sands, Baha Mar s senior vice-president of external and government affairs, told Tribune Business: “COVID-19 requires all of us to reset the way forward button. Notwithstanding, we will continue the BHTA agenda that we have started. In addition, additional focus will be to jump start the hospitality sector safely, and without compromising value for money and guest satisfaction.
Top on our agenda will be ways to ensure hotels get tax relief and, at the same time, government benefits for incremental business. We will create an environment for increased cost competitive airlift, and improved airports throughout the islands of The Bahamas. ....

Bahamas must 'beat guest expectations'

The Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association s (BHTA) outgoing president said this nation must rely on its existing qualities and exceed guest expectations to rebound from COVID19 s ravages.
Speaking on Friday at the Association s 68th annual general meeting (AGM), which was held virtually for the first time, Carlton Russell, who stepped down after four years in the post, said: “The very fact that I am speaking to you from a computer screen as opposed to in-person speaks to the monumental shift that has taken place, across the globe, due to the unprecedented effects of the COVID pandemic.
Mr Russell, who will continue to serve the BHTA as immediate past president, said the slogan Build Back Better, developed after Hurricane Dorian s devastating impact, “continued to be applicable, though in an entirely different context and due to an entirely different cause”. ....

Minister: 'We don't make $1' through health travel visa

[email protected]
A Cabinet minister yesterday admitted the Government is walking a very thin tightrope over the loosening of travel restrictions as he asserted we don t make $1 from the issuance of health visas.
Dionisio D Aguilar, minister of tourism and aviation, hit back at criticism of the $25 cost for domestic travel health visas by arguing that it was purely a cost recovery designed to meet the expenses incurred for administering and processing a traveller s rapid antigen test.
Chester Cooper, the Opposition s deputy leader and finance spokesman, last week slammed the $25 fee as patently absurd and should immediately be stopped given that persons already travelling from Nassau and Grand Bahama to the Family Islands are already required to have a COVID-19 PCR test that costs anywhere from $125 to $225. ....
