26 May 2021 Dr Captain (retired) Syed Ahmed Mortada :Dr Akhteruddin Ahmed, the then Civil Surgeon of Sylhet established Sylhet Medical School, almost single handed, in 1948. He fulfilled the long felt need for a medical school in the then Sylhet district town surmounting many challenges and heavy odds.In 1962, Sylhet Medical College was upgraded to Sylhet Medical College and after the emergence of independent Bangladesh it was renamed Sylhet. ....

The three-day winter session of the Assam Assembly commenced on Monday, following Covid-19 protocols. Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that he will introduce a bill to repeal provincialisation of Madrassas.
Today I shall introduce a Bill to repeal Provincialisation of Madrassa. Once the Bill is passed, the practice of running Madrassa by the Government in Assam will come to an end, a practice which was started by Muslim League govt in pre-Independence Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted. ....

Assam’s madrasas to become regular schools
“We are basically going to run courses on Indian civilisation [in the Sanskrit tolls]…It will be different from history. The curriculum will be prepared from a civilisational point of view,” Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The Assam government has approved the dropping of Islamic subjects from the curriculum of all state-run madrasas and the institutions are to be turned into regular schools. Also, the government has approved converting Sanskrit tolls into centres for learning of Indian heritage and civilisation.

Assam govt decides to convert 740 Madrasas to general schools; Sanskrit Tolls to study centres
Assam govt decides to convert 740 Madrasas to general schools; Sanskrit Tolls to study centres
The Assam government has decided to stop the functioning of all government-run Madrassas and convert them into general educational institutions. Moreover, there are 98 provincialized Sanskrit Tolls in the state which will be converted to study centres, research centres and institutions, a state minister said.
