KARACHI: The alleged defection of two Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf lawmakers is going to hurt the joint opposition in the Sindh Assembly that has fielded five candidates for the Senate election, polling for which is going to be held today (Wednesday).
The ruling Pakistan Peoples Party has fielded 11 candidates on all 11 Senate seats seven general and two each reserved for technocrats and women in disproportion to its 99-lawmaker strength in the 168-strong house.
The joint opposition, which comprises PTI, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan and Grand Democratic Alliance, has jointly nominated five candidates three on general seats and one each on technocrat and women reserved seats in view of its total strength ie 65 in the house. ....

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday said due to time constraints, the Senate election today (Wednesday) will be conducted “as per past practice” prescribed in the Constitution and law.
The commission decided this in a meeting presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. ECP members Justice (retd) Altaf Ibrahim Qureshi, Justice (retd) Irshad Qasir, Shah Muhammad Jatoi and Nisar Ahmed Durrani attended the meeting.
The decision came a day after the Supreme Court gave its opinion on a presidential reference requesting its perspective on whether or not open balloting could be held in today’s election. The court ruled that the Senate elections will be held via secret ballot according to Article 226 of the Constitution. It also suggested the ECP make use of technology to prevent corrupt practices. ....

New low for Pakistan as lawmakers of Imran Khan's party thrash 'rebel' members in Sindh Assembly


KARACHI: In a new low for Pakistan, Prime Minister Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers on Tuesday physically thrashed rebel party members during a session in the Sindh Assembly after they refused to vote for party candidates in the Senate elections.
The three Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs), Aslam Abro, Shehryar Shar and Karim Bakhsh Gabol, had earlier announced that they will vote as per their aspirations, reported Geo News.
When the rebel members entered the Sindh Assembly, they were attacked by the PTI MPAs, leading to chaotic situation chaos in the Sindh Assembly.
As the situation in the Sindh Assembly turned quickly violent, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) members also got involved in attempting to disengage the scuffling lawmakers. ....
