Sizer School's 'Turning 18' speaker series offers advice to seniors

FITCHBURG To end the school year, Sizer School Senior English Teacher and Literacy Specialist Peter Nelson decided to do something a little different.
“Engagement among my seniors in English 12 has been a challenge as the year comes to a close,” said Nelson. “So, for the final four weeks of my English 12 class I am doing something a bit unconventional: We are focusing on what it means to turn 18 in Massachusetts (i.e., reaching the age of legal adulthood). I invited speakers with relevant expertise to speak remotely to my English 12 classes.”
To prepare for each session, Nelson had students research their speaker or the topic of the session. ....

FITCHBURG Six Sizer School students, including a Templeton resident, were recently chosen to be featured in the Massachusetts Art Education Association’s (MAEA) annual Youth Art Month exhibition.
Youth Art Month (YAM) is celebrated nationally every March to highlight the importance of visual art education “in the total education curriculum that develops citizens of a global society,” according to their website. Annually, MAEA sponsors a statewide pre-K-12 YAM exhibit of student artworks submitted by art educators in public, private and independent schools from across the state. The exhibition features outstanding artwork created by students from throughout Massachusetts. ....

Ashburnham native Elizabeth Dugas to co-chair Massachusetts School Nursing Organization

FITCHBURG Sizer School nurse Elizabeth Dugas, a native of Ashburnham, has been accepted to serve as the Region 4 co-chairperson for the Massachusetts School Nursing Organization (MSNO).
The mission of the School Nursing Organization is to “Promote and advance quality school health services throughout the Commonwealth and promote the rights, interests and professional growth of our members,” according to their website, msno.org. “Members are encouraged to take an active stance in decisions directly impacting school nursing, especially in the legislative, economic and educational areas.”
Region 4 is western Massachusetts and is considered the largest of the 10 regions. This new opportunity will allow Dugas to connect to fellow school nurses to each other and resources to better serve the student population. ....
