When growing up in Yea, in rural Victoria, Campbell Townsend took a dim view of drugs.
“My parents were born in the shadow of Nixon’s war on drugs, and I was a very simple country boy,” the psychologist says, sitting in his cottage outside Castlemaine. “I grew up with stories from my parents about friends of theirs at university going crazy just from one choof of a bong.”

Australia won't legalise ecstasy and magic mushrooms to treat mental illness - Hack


The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has decided it won’t recognise ecstasy and magic mushrooms as legitimate medicines to treat mental illnesses.
The national medicine regulator handed down its interim decision today, stating the current classification for MDMA and psilocybin (the psychoactive ingredient in shrooms) “remains appropriate”.
Psychedelic therapy advocate Mind Medicine Australia (MMA) applied to the TGA last year to consider changing that classification so mental health professionals could more easily access these medicines.
MMA chair Peter Hunt said the TGA had made the wrong decision.
“[We’re] disappointed,” he said.
“Our submissions were supported by leading researchers in these therapies from around the world… I don’t think enough focus was given to the quality of people supporting our submissions.” ....
