First Look: A Bust of Elie Wiesel Is Coming to National Cathedral

Along with saints and biblical figures, Washington National Cathedral features sculptures of various modern-day figures, including busts of Mother Teresa and Rosa Parks, among others. This fall, a new face will join their ranks: Elie Wiesel, the Nobel Prize-winning author and activist who dedicated his life to ensuring the world never forgot the horrors of the Holocaust.
Though the structure has plenty of room for new stone faces, the cathedral’s fine-arts committee is highly selective in who they include, with gaps as long as five years between additions. Once someone is picked for inclusion, a two-year process of sculpting and consulting with the family begins. ....

WASHINGTON (JTA) Washington’s National Cathedral is honoring Elie Wiesel, the Nobel Peace Laureate and Holocaust memoirist, with a bust, the first Jew to be so honored.

Washington’s National Cathedral, known for its role during presidential inaugurations and other days of national import, is honoring Elie Wiesel, the Nobel Peace Laureate and Holocaust memoirist with a bust, making him the first Jew to be so honored.
Or maybe not the first, depending on where you sit.
“I would say he is the first 20th-century Jewish person,” the cathedral’s dean, Rev. Randy Hollerith, said when asked how Wiesel came to be the first Jew to earn a sculpted depiction at the cathedral.
Asked if he was referring to Jesus and some of the apostles, who also make appearances in statues and in busts in the Washington landmark, Hollerith said yes. ....
