Walking tracks in Kilkenny communities ‘a godsend’ during lockdown Reporter: ); Walking tracks around the county have been a “godsend” during lockdown, says one local councillor. Cllr Peter Chap Cleere said a huge amount of walking tracks have been funded under the Community Cultural Grant and the feedback he has gotten is that they have been a “godsend for so many, a lifesaver in challenging times.” He said they have made a difference. Director of Services Mary Mulholland acknowledged that a lot of policy and funding are aimed at bigger population centres but Covid has shown that many can’t travel significant distances and smaller communities need their own amenities. The County Council acknowledges that and acknowledges the importance of amenities. ....
Graveyards running out of space in Bennettsbridge and Callan Reporter: ); ); Bennettsbridge parish graveyard is close to capacity and may run out of grave space in the next year. “There is concern in the community, in families, where they are going to go when they pass away,” said Cllr Patrick O’Neill raising the issue at the recent meeting of Callan Thomastown Municipal District councillors. Cllr O’Neill said the matter had been raised in the past. “We tried over the years but the parish didn’t want to push it, we presented options but they didn’t want to do it,” he said, adding that this is a big concern for people in the area. ....

Councillors call for creation of Heritage Trail for Callan Reporter: ); ); The abundance of interesting sites in Callan would make an attractive heritage trail, a local councillor has proposed. Cllr Joe Lyons has suggested the trail could start from the Cherryfield famine graveyard, south of the town, continue through the town past the former workhouse and St Mary’s Abbey, into the new walking path in the Moat Field, and on into Westcourt. There are also other sites of interest that could be included. The many historic sites in Callan would make the trail a good attraction for the town, Cllr Lyons said, at the recent meeting of Callan Thomastown municipal district councillors. ....
