Firefighters recognized for rescue efforts during deadly house fire

national city  As a crew of firefighters from National City rushed in an engine to a house that was fully engulfed in flames last April, a dispatcher alerted them to a concerning report: a 911 caller heard screams coming from inside the garage. “We knew we were going to go right into rescue mode,” said National City fire Capt. Derek Jones, who was part of the crew that responded to the fire in the outlying Paradise Hills neighborhood of San Diego, just east of National City. “Your heart starts pumping, but you know what you trained for,” Jones said. “You know what to do.”

McKinnon was on duty on March 26 when he saw a pickup truck go out of control on Murrayville Road and overturn in a ditch filled with water. The vehicle filled with water and the driver was trapped but McKinnon used a crowbar to shatter a window and pull the man out. The driver, who did not have a pulse, was revived by a passer-by performing CPR.
