Save South Winchester Campaign Group on Local Plan refresh

Consultation on Winchester City Council s plan refresh draws to a close on April 12.
This will shape future infrastructure investments and determine which areas can be developed across the district.
Save South Winchester Campaign Group is pleading that Royaldown – the scheme to build a new town between Winchester and Hursley – is not considered.
Hampshire County Councillor and Hursley resident Jan Warwick said: “We know our local traffic network is stretched to the limit in normal times, so it was important for us to understand the traffic impact from another 5,000 houses, 2,000 space Park and Ride, two schools, shops and commercial sites.
The report estimates the site will generate 25,000 additional car journeys everyday piling onto Badger Farm Road, Poles Lane and the M3 junctions”. ....

SIR: The consultation for Your Place Your Plan has been open for over three weeks and the members of the Save South Winchester Campaign Group (SSWCG) have been looking carefully at both the content of the draft plan and the consultation questions. We echo the city council’s call for as many people to make their views known as possible, although a lengthy draft plan, with 12 accompanying documents, makes understanding and responding to the many questions in the consultation not an easy task.
The SSWCG believes that none of the four housing options presented offers the best choice, and two of them include the risk of large scale development on greenfield land south of Winchester. The Save South Winchester (SSW) petition attracted 5,000 signatures and the campaign counts 1,300 Facebook followers ....

Winchester campaign: Royaldown demo to be held online

CAMPAIGNERS are preparing for a virtual demo against a proposed new town near Winchester.
The Save South Winchester campaign opposes the scheme for 5,000 homes on farmland between Oliver’s Battery and Hursley.
Originally a march around the site had been proposed but the third lockdown has meant that this has since gone online for Sunday February 28, writes Andrew Napier.
Tickets for the event are now up on EventBrite (search for ‘Save South Winchester’).
It will comprise a short drone video showing the area under threat, three-minute speeches by Winchester MP Steve Brine, Caroline Dibden (of Hampshire CPRE) and Cllr Jackie Porter followed by questions by attendees. ....

WHAT a year. Surely 2021 has to be better than this?
For more than a decade I have represented us in Parliament and I don’t think I’ve ever worked harder or been more challenged by the terrain before us.
It is true, in any walk of life, that experience guides the hand of success but I certainly feel blessed to have had so much I can fall back on this year.
The early part of 2021 will (hopefully) be recovery from the pandemic; both in how we roll out the vaccine across Hampshire and seek to get economic growth going again. ....
