Proposed legislation would "Save Democracy," says AMAC

A recent Rasmussen poll shows that a majority of Americans across party lines are focused on the need to strengthen voter credentials. A massive 89 percent of Republicans said that we need to require voters to show photo IDs in order to ensure “a fair and secure election process. Sixty-five percent of Democrats agreed and so did 71 percent of independents.
Meanwhile, in the months leading up to the November elections last year, just 19 percent of Americans said they were “very” confident in the process, according to the pollsters at Gallup. Another 40 percent of survey respondents would say only that they were somewhat confident. ....

Almost a year after its initial passage, the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives has once again passed HR 1, the For the People Act. However, there’s one major difference this year this misleadingly named bill is no longer dead on arrival in a Republican Senate or White House. ....

On 3 March, the House of Representatives passed H.R.1 For the People Act of 2021 largely along party lines by a vote of 220-210. All GOP lawmakers and one Democratic representative, Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, voted against the legislation, which was previously denounced as a federal government takeover by the Republicans.
In 2019, the GOP shot the For the People Act down in the US Senate. Having gained a slim majority in both chambers of the US Congress following the 2020 elections, the Democrats reintroduced the legislation in early January. Now the bill is heading to the Senate floor. ....

In 1890, Mississippi became one of the first states in the country to call a constitutional convention for the express purpose of writing white supremacy into the DNA of the state.
At the time, a majority of the registered voters in the state were Black men. The lone Black delegate to the convention, Isaiah Montgomery, participated in openly suppressing the voting eligibility of most of those Black men, in the hope that this would reduce the terror, intimidation and hostility that white supremacists aimed at Black people. ....
