Regarding Noozhawk’s April 8 article, “3 Arrested on Murder Charges in January Double Homicides on Santa Barbara’s Eastside,” many thanks are owed the Santa Barbara Police Department for the arrests in the Jan. 3 murders of two Santa Barbara High School students. As a resident of the neighborhood where the murders occurred, I’ve been resentful of how the case was handled, but I hope the suspects will be convicted and rot in prison.
Acting Police Chief Barney Melekian was quoted as saying, “As a society we must continue to work with the young people in our community to ensure that no more lives are lost.” I agree, and I hope the police will start with being more forthcoming with people like me who live in neighborhoods where gang members live. I’d like to see more police patrols. ....

Alas, it was too much of a sacrifice to ask of the thin-skinned and overly sensitive people who simply refuse to be a responsible part of society and who insist on asserting their “rights.”
In my daily excursions around local beaches, parks and hiking trails, I am continually shocked at how few people take the simple and responsible precaution of wearing a mask. I estimate that only 5 percent to 10 percent of the people I encounter wear a mask, regardless of their age, under 40 or over 65. Groups of people gather, none wearing a mask, apparently oblivious to the risks they pose to themselves and others. ....

Regarding Noozhawk’s Feb. 2 story, “With Council Approval, Santa Barbara Ready to Power Up Electric Bike Program at Waterfront,” if it were not for the Shazam password “bike,” the program to install commercial for-profit, intrusive infrastructure on public streets and places in this town would be laughed off stage.
The fact that the Ebike vendor, BCycle, has managed to convince our managers and City Council that their opportunity to make a buck is a sign of a healthy city is more than odd. One assumes that other communities have resisted this co-option. Why are we not? ....
