Leighann Bacher has seen that Vaccinate Pittsburgh, a Facebook page she co-founded, has primarily drawn people over the age of 65. A mother of two children, Bacher connected with another mom, Heather Lucci, in southwest Pennsylvania to create their group, after they had both found challenges getting vaccinations for themselves and family members. We started Jan. 31, and it just kind of exploded from there, Bacher said. They have a little more than 30,000 members now. How does this work? About 100 volunteers make the machines run at VaccinatePA. The VaccinatePA.org site was launched by two University of Pittsburgh computer science undergraduates along with Seth Rubinstein, a Harvard Law School student living in Montgomery County. Users are asked to choose a county. From there, they’re presented with an list of providers according to which ones have recently reported that they’re taking appointments. Some Pennsylvanians have said attempting to book appointments through the state’s website is time-consuming and often fruitless. The goal with this site, Rubinstein said, is to make the process simpler and less time-consuming for people who may not be tech-savvy or have a lot of spare time. ....

Solis / AP As many Pennsylvanians continue to struggle through a decentralized system in their search for COVID-19 vaccines, some have called for a statewide resource to lighten their load. The Department of Health has said it remains open to adjusting its decentralized approach, but that no statewide appointment managing resource is being developed. A new bill in the state House could force the department’s hand. The “COVID-19 Vaccine Registry Act” would require the department to host a database where Pennsylvanians would register to be put on a waiting list for an appointment. Vaccine providers would then be required to use the registry and contact registrants for appointment scheduling. The Department of Health would be tasked with maintaining the database. ....
