BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) Deschutes County and St. Charles Health System said Monday they plan to open scheduling for vaccine appointments on Tuesday morning, but acknowledged their online and phone systems are already buckling under the strain.
The Oregon Health Authority has allocated 2,340 first-dose COVID-19 vaccines to Deschutes County for this week, 800 fewer than last week, when all appointment slots were booked in two hours. Following state guidance, adults 65 and older will now be eligible to schedule appointments.

Central Oregon residents age 75 and older are now eligible to schedule their COVID-19 vaccine at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center. Vaccines are provided by appointment only.
Residents in Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties who are 75 and older, as well as individuals in Phases 1A and 1B – Group 1, can schedule an appointments at www.stcharleshealthcare.org. When registering for an appointment, residents must attest to meeting the State’s criteria for vaccination. Starting next week, St. Charles Health System and Deschutes County plan to begin hosting vaccination clinics at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center. The clinics will be available to individuals in the phase 1a group by appointment only. "We are preparing to move vaccine clinics to the fairgrounds so that we can safely vaccinate more people faster," said Dr. Jeff Absalon, chief physician executive for St. Charles. "We are going to be ready to deploy vaccine to our community. But we also acknowledge the vaccine is in very short supply. We are striving to get as many doses here as possible." Initially, the clinics will be available to individuals in the phase 1a group by appointment only, expanding to other high-priority groups, including educators, child care providers and seniors, in tandem with the state as outlined Friday by Gov. Kate Brown and the Oregon Health Authority.
