Born July 3, 1956, in Charlotte, he graduated from North Mecklenburg High School in 1974. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, North Carolina, in 1978 and a Master of Music degree in church music from Westminster Choir College, Princeton, New Jersey, in 1980.
