LAKELAND, Fla. — A Polk County college is in need of more space for it’s rapidly growing nursing program.
“One of the most compassionate and hardworking professions. We didn’t choose to be nurses, we’ve been called. Now we have proof with our degree that we are nurses,” said Kelly Farrell, Florida Southern College graduating nursing class of 2021.
Friday Florida Southern College held a virtual pinning ceremony for its graduating nursing class of 2021. The college is seeing a high increase in students wanting to enroll in its nursing program and its partly due to the pandemic. ....

SEIU calls off strike by Connecticut nursing home workers, accepts governor’s inadequate last-minute deal
Connecticut Democratic Governor Ned Lamont, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and nursing home operators reached an eleventh-hour agreement to prevent 2,800 workers at 26 nursing homes throughout the state from going on strike early Friday morning. The deal will also prevent another 1,200 workers at other facilities from striking May 28.
The proposed agreement provides raises that are inadequate to ensure these essential workers a decent living in one of the country’s more expensive states. Moreover, it does not address workers’ demands for improved staffing ratios in nursing homes, which have been ravaged by COVID-19 infections and deaths. ....

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - In life, sometimes people get placed in the right place at the right time, and that seems to be the case for one local CHRISTUS nurse honored today with an brand-new award.
The moment John Zumbro and Cortney Shelton truly met was an emotional one at the CHRISTUS Nursing Excellence Award Ceremony. It was there that Shelton received the first-ever “Good Samaritan” Award from CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances. However, their paths first crossed in May 2020. As Zumbro was traveling on Interstate 20 on his motorcycle, he saw something on the side of the road. He took his eyes off the road and that was when the accident struck. ....
