You ll have to dig deep to recall the Christmas special from 2012, a story about an unwed teen abandoning her newborn on the convent steps. But it s the scenes around another character the widow Mrs. Jenkins that bestows my unexpected gift.
Years earlier, newly widowed with five children to feed, Mrs. Jenkins had made the excruciating decision of turning herself and her brood over to the care of one of England s notorious workhouses. All of her children died there, malnourished and mistreated. They didn t thrive, she told Jenny Lee, the midwife/nurse sent to care for her in abominable living conditions. ....

LAKE LINDEN Lillian “Lil” (Pini) Lang, 82 of Lake Linden passed away on January 19, 2021, at UP Health System – Portage due to complications from COVID-19. She passed away peacefully with her loving daughters at her side.
Lillian was born September 13, 1938, in Hubbell, a daughter of Eugene andMargaret (Mongeau) Pini – the first of their 13 children. After living the first years of her life in Hubbell the family “bought-the-farm” on the Rice Lake road where she then spent her youth. The farm was the nucleus of the family for decades after and where Lil and her siblings worked the farm daily to support the family’s dairy business. It was in these formative years where Lil nurtured her many talents. She became a skilled seamstress, an amazing baker, an avid flower gardener and a talented painter. But her greatest achievement was becoming the “best big sister” to each and every one of her younger siblings. Later with the passing of her ....
