The most compelling response to President Biden’s first address to a joint session of Congress was not the ably enough delivered yet largely predictable recitation of Republican talking points by South Carolina Senator Tim Scott. The most compelling response of the night was the appeal by a progressive who celebrated what was big and bold about Biden’s message, but who did not hesitate to say that the president and the Democratic Party must do much, much more “to meet the gravity of the moment.” ....
Rep. Jamaal Bowman put Tim Scott s dumb speech to shame with a progressive response to Biden s address to Congress Wednesday night. And Bowman laid the blame for the failures in pandemic response and resulting economic crisis firmly at the feet of the former guy. His full remarks below were as specific and detailed as Joe Biden s earlier. It s clear there is an organized effort to continue to push the surprisingly progressive Biden administration to do even more for the working class. That s great news. Doubles down on emissions This week Biden fulfilled a campaign promise in convening a “global climate summit” within his first 100 days in office. The two-day virtual meeting, attended by the leaders of a number of US allies and two of its adversaries China and Russia appears like many of these gatherings to be mostly a talking shop. But a decision on Thursday is substantive, and therefore bears examination. The president committed the US to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 50 to 52% below its 2005 emissions levels by 2030, without revealing any details as to how this would be achieved. The announcement also brings GHG reduction targets 20 years forward from what is set out in Biden’s $2.3 trillion infrastructure/ clean energy proposal unveiled in March. That plan commits to net-zero emissions by 2050 (net-zero refers to balancing the amount of emitted greenhouse gases with the equivalent emissions that are either offset or seques ....
