Live from Ithaca: In-person music and theater returns to Ithaca

The COVID-19 vaccine rollout is paying off in Tompkins County’s arts and entertainment industry. With 65% of the county’s population having received at least one dose of the vaccine, theaters and music venues in Ithaca are adjusting their summer events accordingly.
On May 19, New York state’s mask mandate, which previously required fully vaccinated people to wear masks indoors and outdoors, was dropped, allowing those who are fully vaccinated to go maskless in most places.
At places like The Dock, this means that fully vaccinated patrons may leave their masks at the table while walking around the venue and listening to live music. Terry Bailey, president of The Dock, said that musicians have been playing live since late March 2021. The venue’s first in-person performance since the start of the pandemic was part of The Dock’s “Tuesday Bluesday,” an ongoing, biweekly performance by a band. ....

Cornell poet’s play “Trap Door” opens an aperture into Ithaca history
“Trap Door,” a “headphone walking play” that opens May 20 in downtown Ithaca, invites audiences to notice the streets they travel, said Cornell poet Lyrae Van Clief-Stefanon.
“Meandering these streets, one might happen upon a landmark site or a name easily recognized. But how many stories go untold? Which ones have slipped into gaps in history? What place do such silences hold in shaping a community?” said Van Clief-Stefanon, associate professor of literatures in English and lead writer of the play. “‘Trap Door offers an aperture: one the walking play format encourages us to pass through, allowing us to see our surroundings in a new light.” ....

Turning the corner

ITHACA, NY Things have been changing rapidly over the past few months as more and more people are being vaccinated in Tompkins County and throughout the state and country. As it stands currently, about 36% of people in the county are fully vaccinated, and nearly 60% of people have received their first dose. With eligibility open to everyone 16+, it’s not unreasonable to think the county could hit the 75-80% vaccination number needed to reach herd immunity sometime this summer.
So what does that mean for residents? Well, with ever-evolving science and changing guidelines, it’s hard to say exactly. Local businesses are starting to relax some of their capacity requirements, restaurants are looking forward to welcoming more people both inside and out, and there will be some live entertainment available this summer, something that was nearly impossible to find a year ago. ....
