SUBMITTED 17 hrs ago TAHLEQUAH âFour newcomers were elected to the Council of the Cherokee Nation during a run-off election Saturday, according to unofficial totals from the Cherokee Nation Election Commission. Theyâll join four Council incumbents who were re-elected and a fifth newcomer who was elected during the June Cherokee Nation General Election. The four elected during the July 24 runoff include Candessa Tehee of District 2, Joshua Sam of District 7, Melvina Shotpouch of District 10, and Johnny Jack Kidwell for an at-large Tribal Council seat. Tehee finished with 367 votes or 50.48 percent of votes cast in District 2. âI am honored and grateful for the support Iâve received over the course of this election,â Tehee said. âMy family and I want to thank everyone who made this possible. TAHLEQUAH â The Cherokee Nation Election Commission has a process for in-person, early and absentee voting to ensure that all votes are accounted for in a tribal election. When absentee ballots are mailed in, usually before Election Day, they are placed in a secured absentee ballot box located at the Tahlequah post office. âThe absentee ballots shall be removed from the post office and taken to the Election Commission Office by members of the Election Commission or their designees at the appropriate time to be verified and counted for the election,â states Title 26 Election Law Sec- tion 79. Absentee ballots requested by voters who return them in person to the EC are referred to as walk-in absentee voting or early voting. ....
