UK College of Education Shares Ways to Help Students Process Racial Trauma


Candice Hargons, an assistant professor in the Department of Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology, says Black students need to be heard and responded to with empathy as they process the pain of racial injustice.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 12, 2021)  As anniversaries of the tragedies that sparked nationwide protests against systemic racism approach, faculty members with the Education and Civil Rights Initiative in collaboration with the NAACP, based in the University of Kentucky College of Education, are sharing information to aid school personnel in helping students process racial trauma and feel supported when speaking out on the journey for racial equity.

UK to Host Virtual Events in Recognition of Black History Month

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 1, 2021)  The University of Kentucky’s Martin Luther King Center, in collaboration with units across campus, will host a variety of events and programming, most of which will be virtual, to celebrate Black History Month this February.
While this year’s observance looks different than past year’s due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the observation of Black History Month will, nonetheless, allow the history and culture of Black Americans to be centered in recognition of past and present challenges, struggles and achievements.
