Deadline Detroit | City of Detroit, Free Press settle suit over $220K bill for documents

The city of Detroit will produce some investigative records sought by the Detroit Free Press as part of a settlement agreement ending the paper s suit over exhorbitant costs and time assessed for documents related to the Make Your Date scandal of 2019.
The city billed the paper more than $222,000 for documents related to the Detroit Office of the Inspector General s investigation that found Mayor Mike Duggan gave preferential treatment to the prenatal organization, run by a woman with whom he reportedly was having an affair. The paper s request included emails from the personal accounts of Duggan and former chief of staff Alexis Wiley, who admitted to using the accounts for city business during the investigation. ....

'Racism in America' webinar to examine protest movements

Worldwide protests against police brutality, an armed attack on the Capitol, protests in Europe and the U.S. against COVID restrictions– 2020 and 2021 stand out as years when those on the left and the right turned to both peaceful and armed protests to change the directions governments were headed. Structural racism and racial inequality were at the heart of much of these protests.
In its next webinar, the College of Arts and Sciences’ (A&S) yearlong webinar series, “Racism in America,” will examine how protest movements and civil disobedience have sought to both end and uphold white supremacy and racial discrimination. City pushes back on report of wasteful spending in Motor City Match

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan s administration on Tuesday sought to tamp down a watchdog report that found excessive spending and a lack of oversight in a city program designed to help jump-start small businesses, arguing the report was not in step with reality.
Detroit s Office of Inspector General on Jan. 4 released a report from its nearly 18-month investigation into Duggan s Motor City Match program. The review uncovered weak controls in the program for issuing payments.
It also found that an abnormally high number of businesses in the grant-funded effort to support Detroit entrepreneurs failed.
Inspector General Ellen Ha stressed Tuesday during a discussion about the report with Detroit s City Council that We did not make up any of these numbers, and We were very specific. ....
