UPPER NYACK - Nyack High School senior Jadyn Turner remembers the last time she saw her cousin Alyssa Alhadeff. The Turners were visiting the Alhadeffs in Parkland, Florida, and the cousins were planning to see each other very soon.
Weeks later, Alyssa was killed in the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting in Parkland, Florida. Alyssa was shot 10 times. She was a 14-year-old freshman and a soccer standout.
On Friday, Jadyn Turner stood outside her high school with state Sen. Elijah Reichlin-Melnick, Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski, Nyack School District Superintendent James Montesano and others as they advocated for “Alyssa’s Law.”

Raptor Technologies CEO, Gray Hall, testified before the Texas House Public Education Committee on Tuesday, April 13 in support of House Bill 204. The new legislation known as “Alyssa’s Law” calls for Texas schools to install silent panic alert systems directly connected to first responders to improve emergency response times. If passed, Texas would be only the third state, joining New Jersey and Florida, to adopt this law.
time equals life.
By installing a secure communications system that connects directly with emergency personnel, more lives could be saved.
The bill was referred to the Public Education Committee and a public hearing took place at 8:00 AM, April 13. After considering a bill, a committee may choose to take no action or may issue a report on the bill to the chamber at large. In a favorable report, the committee may recommend passage of the bill without amendments, recommend amendments to the bill, or substitute a new bill for the original bill. An unfavorable report generally kills the bill.
If the proposed bill passes, all Texas school districts and open-enrollment charter schools would need to be in compliance by the 2023-2024 school year.
