BETHEL The Board of Education met virtually this week to discuss what could be accomplished next school year, but did not decide where $400,000 in cuts will be made in its proposed 2021-22 budget.
The Board of Finance called for a $400,000 cut to the proposed education budget last month in an effort to reduce the town’s year-over-year mill rate increase to 1.9 percent leaving the schools with a $49 million budget for 2021-22. ....

Very shortly, Connecticut’s moratorium on utility shut-offs will end, and then what happens?
Though hope springs eternal, if utility company’s past practices are any indication, things will not go smoothly.
It may be hard to believe, but not all states implemented such shut-off moratoriums during the pandemic, and unpaid utility bills have risen to an estimated $27 billion nationwide, according to Mark Wolfe, executive director of the National Energy Assistance Directors Association. After reviewing shut-off data from around the country, the Center for Biological Diversity said roughly 765,000 households had power cut during the pandemic, with disastrous results. A paper from Duke University estimates that a federal ban (similar to the one in place on evictions) would have reduced COVID-19 infections by 4.4%, and deaths by 7.4%. ....

NEWTOWN Connecticut’s firearms industry slipped slightly during the coronavirus crisis in 2020, losing 100 jobs and seeing its economic production decrease nominally by 0.2 percent.
But Connecticut kept its place as a top 10 state in the economic impact of its firearms industry, according to a new report by the Newtown-based trade association for the firearms industry.
“Connecticut is known for its very strict gun laws, but the historical roots of the gun industry are right there along the Connecticut River where they still have a presence and where they are obviously doing well and continue to add to the economy,” said Mark Oliva, a spokesm ....
