WWII landing craft that was dug up after 74 years still has WORKING ramp and ration packs on board


The 26ft-long LVT-4 landing craft was uncovered in April by a team of dedicated volunteers in Crowland
It was one of 16 brought in to act as a flood defence in the village Crowland, Lincolnshire during 1947 floods 
However, when water was pumped back into the flood plain, several of the LVT-4s floated away
The one dug up in April sank into a hole, whilst a further two of them remain in fishing pits  ....

It had lain buried underground for 74 years – but an extraordinary project to locate and dig up an amphibious tank in Crowland was completed on Thursday.

The Buffalo landing vehicle was one of two which sank after being washed away during an operation to construct a temporary dam following floods in 1947.
Crowland farmer Daniel Abbott pored over records and carried out exploratory work over the past three years to confirm that two stricken vehicles were still near the fishing pit.
And there was a lump in his throat at 3.50pm on Thursday as a cheer went up from the army of volunteers as the first Buffalo began to be hauled out from 30ft below ground level. ....

A World War II veteran whose first day of service was during the Normandy landings, has passed away aged 98 after having contracted Covid.
Former tank driver Bill Anderson died on January 30 - more than 76 years after first seeing action on June 6, 1944, at the age of just 20 years old.
Bill s very first day of active service was when he drove a Sherman M3 tank onto Juno beach on the day of the Normandy Landings.
He was also in command of the first tank, unlucky number 13, to cross the Orne River Bridge during Operation Tonga - and was the only vehicle in the Troop not to be destroyed. ....
