Ogdensburg fire union president says city manager putting residents at risk with reckless actions

OGDENSBURG – Ogdensburg Fire Union President Jason Bouchard says the city manager’s one-vehicle response goes against department of health standards and puts citizens at risk.
“Ogdensburg City Manager Steve Jellie, who recently laid off five firefighters, wants desperately to have his way, no matter how unsafe or how much resistance he gets. Ogdensburg Firefighters are unanimously opposed to running only one engine to all emergency calls. The CM simply won’t listen and is pushing us to implement his plan,” Bouchard said in a prepared statement.
Bouchard said one big concern the firefighters have is the growing spread of COVID-19. ....

Ogdensburg manager, firefighters trade barbs over use of fire engines

OGDENSBURG â The public battle between the city and its fire union continued Friday with a fierce letter from the unionâs president, saying City Manager Stephen P. Jellie âwants desperately to have his way, no matter how unsafe or how much resistance he gets.â
In a letter to media Friday, Jason T. Bouchard, president of Ogdensburg Professional Firefighters, Local 1799, called out Mr. Jellie â who is also the fire chief â for opting to have just one fire engine running to all emergency calls.
âThereâs so many reasons why his one engine response is a bad idea, and we will eventually pay the price for this thoughtless move. Responding to a structure fire with only one engine, with a backup engine at least 10 minutes behind, could very well have devastating consequences,â Mr. Bouchard wrote. âWeâre at a complete loss for how and why this is happening. Ogdensburg fire union rejects city's contract offer in blistering letter shared publicly | St. Lawrence County

Jason Bouchard, president of the Ogdensburg Professional Firefighters, Local 1799, shared the letter publicly Friday.
âThe city has asked the Union forego decades of collective bargaining to save our jobs from elimination, a decision the city leaders themselves have made,â the letter from union members to Mr. Bouchard reads. âThe majority of these individuals voted to violate our contract before they ever came to us with one proposal to stop it. They have used the five of us as hostages, in an effort to bust our union, eliminate our manning, and destroy our legally binding contract. The type of negotiation the city manager and city has engaged in is strictly put, improper. The city simply issued a ransom note, as they issued layoff notices, blaming us. Please indicate that we note their efforts and we all voted a steadfast, NO, on the cityâs offer. Their goal to destroy our department is undeniable.â ....
