University of Liverpool presses ahead with job cuts plan in collaboration with University and College Union

University of Liverpool presses ahead with job cuts plan in collaboration with University and College Union
The University of Liverpool intends to carry out redundancies in its Health and Life Sciences faculty, in opposition to staff in the department and wider university.
The university announced in January that 47 members of teaching and research staff in the faculty were due to be let go in May. It claims the cuts are needed to fund the building of a new research centre and, absurdly, to implement a new project to “tackle the extreme health inequalities and unmet health needs in the Liverpool City Region”. ....

UK universities cut arts, languages, humanities and social science degrees

UK universities cut arts, languages, humanities and social science degrees
The World Socialist Web Site has reported on the University of Sheffield’s intention to
and
students. The decision that the department did not provide “value for money” came as the government is considering plans which would allow it to take more direct control of which courses receive funding.

Course cuts are bound up with the marketisation of higher education which has escalated after the passage of the Higher Education and Research Act in 2017, under which the Office for Students (OfS) was mandated to “encourage competition between English higher education providers” and “promote value for money”. As higher education becomes a marketplace with brutal competition to recruit students and cut costs, universities ....

Students back on UK campuses amid explosive growth of Indian covid variant

Students back on UK campuses amid explosive growth of Indian covid variant
University students began returning to campus on May 17, during the Johnson government’s reopening the economy while removing restrictions on the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The first reopening of campuses last September led to the massive spread of Covid-19, forcing thousands of students to self-isolate after travelling away from friends and family. The government is repeating the same reckless policy, recommending that all students be “eligible to return to in-person teaching and learning.”

UK further and higher education staff suffer attacks on pay and conditions

UK further and higher education staff suffer attacks on pay and conditions
Educators throughout the further education sector who have been returning to schools since the beginning of March are facing pay cuts, job losses and increased workloads as employers attempt to place the economic burden of the pandemic on the working class.

Several strikes have erupted or are breaking out, indicating the determination of workers to defend their conditions. However, they are opposed in this by the unions, chief among them the University and College Union (UCU), which is isolating and shutting down every trace of opposition by staff. The unions are continuing the role they have played since the start of the pandemic suppressing industrial action in the name of “national unity” and allowing big business and the Conservative governmen ....

Why is the Government talking about uni free speech when students can't pay their rent?

The Government made a rare mention of university students yesterday, announcing its commitment to tackle an issue we thought only really mattered to Oxbridge nerds and the sexually repressed.
Gavin Williamson isn’t spearheading a campaign to tackle the growing mental health crisis. He isn’t announcing new measures to compensate students for online degrees or for houses they’re paying for but can’t live in. And he hasn’t unveiled plans to chip away at the growing problem of digital poverty among uni students.
Instead, the Education Minister has announced that a “free speech champion” will be appointed to clamp down on the no-platforming and cancel culture plaguing university campuses up and down the country. ....
