Today, Governor Jared Polis joined U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia L. Fudge to discuss how the American Rescue Plan will deliver immediate and long-term relief to Coloradans experiencing homelessness. Governor Polis was also joined by House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan, and San Francisco Mayor London Breed.

STATEMENT: CAP Applauds HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge for Rescinding Proposed Rule Change Targeting Transgender Americans

Washington, D.C. On Thursday, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge announced that her agency is withdrawing a proposed rule change sought by the previous administration that would have reinterpreted the Equal Access Rule to gut protections for transgender people.
The proposed rule change would have made it easier for HUD-funded shelters to deny service to transgender Americans. The Obama administration expanded protections to explicitly cover transgender Americans in 2016, but Donald Trump moved to strip these protections in his final months in office. Activists, led by the Center for American Progress and the Housing Saves Lives campaign, organized more than 66,000 comments from the public in opposition to the proposed rule change. ....

Biden admin scraps Trump-era proposal to limit trans protections at shelters

The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Thursday that transgender people would be protected from discrimination at federally funded homeless shelters.
The department said it would withdraw a rule proposed by the Trump administration in July that would’ve weakened the Obama-era Equal Access Rule, which ensures people have equal access to federally funded shelters and facilities regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
HUD will reaffirm the Equal Access Rule and require that transgender and gender-nonconforming people be housed in shelters in accordance with their gender identity. ....
