Channel Deepening, New Dredge Projects Made Headlines In 2020

While COVID-19 proved the dominant newsmaker for much of 2020, a steady stream of dredging and waterway announcements during the year will, hopefully, have a much more enduring and endearing impact on the maritime industry.
The waterway deepening news started early in the year, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ 2020 work plan, released February 10. The work plan, remarkably, included both funding for the first phase of deepening the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge, La., to the Gulf of Mexico to 50 feet and more than $274 million to fully fund the construction of the Mobile Harbor channel deepening project in Alabama, which will also bring that channel to 50 feet. ....

In the top story of 2020, an invisible virus has, to date, caused more than a million and a half deaths worldwide, sickened tens of millions more, overwhelmed the health care facilities of many countries at times, and upended the global economy, completely reshaping some industries. It is a story that is far from over, but whose end may be in sight.
After crash development by an emergency team under the aegis of Operation Warp Speed, two vaccines have been developed, one by Pfizer-BioNTech and the other by Moderna. Pfizer’s has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration after encouraging testing indicating an effectiveness of more than 90 percent. Moderna’s vaccine was awaiting approval at press time, with 6 million doses ready for immediate allocation. ....

Bristol and North Somerset will move down to tier 2 of coronavirus restrictions within England s three-tier system.
The government said the regions will move into the high tier when it announced changes on Thursday.
The changes are due to come into force from Saturday 19 December.
Tier three was imposed on South Gloucestershire, Bristol and North Somerset after the national lockdown ended on 2 December.
South Gloucestershire will remain in tier 3.
Elsewhere in the West region - Bath and North East Somerset, Cheltenham, South Somerset, Sedgemoor, Swindon, Tewkesbury and Wiltshire will all remain in tier 2. ....
