About this event The Jewish community of the Caucasus, the mountainous region between the Black and Caspian Seas, is known by many names. The terms “Kavkazi,” taken from the Hebrew word for Caucasus, and “Mountain Jews”, have been used interchangeably. But traditionally this community have called themselves “Juhuro,” translated as “Jews”, from their ancestral language Juhuri, a Middle Persian-Jewish dialect Kavkazi Jews lived in Azerbaijan and the Russian Republics of the North Caucasus – Dagestan, Chechnya, Kabardino-Balkaria, and Karachay-Cherkessia. However, their history dates back to the expulsion of the Jews from Israel in biblical times, when they found refuge in the Persian Empire in the 500-600s BCE. ....

The inaugural event on May 6, 8-9 PM EDT, will feature leading Greek and Iraqi musicians, and Dr. Ali Al Mayahi, Iraq’s Cultural Attaché to the USA. The event dedicated to Greek, Sephardic, and Iraqi music will be the first-ever occasion for an Iraqi government representative to participate in a Jewish-themed event. The event comes ahead of the 80th anniversary of the Farhud (a Nazi-inspired pogrom in Baghdad that brought to an end over two millennia of vibrant Jewish life in Iraq), observed each June 1 as a UN-designated International Farhud Day. ....

Andalusi music, originally developed in al-Andalus in the Iberian Peninsula in the 9th century by the native Muslim population, influenced many different styles of music across the Maghreb, including piyyutim (liturgical music of Moroccan Jews), which is sung in Hebrew, Arabic, and Haketía. ....
