GEORGE TOWN (Jan 7): Despite tight resources, but for the sake of its 1.6 million citizens, the Penang government will push on with four projects cancelled by the Federal government. Penang Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow, said with the impact of Covid-19 on the economy, the projects are important to stimulate growth, create jobs and improve the socioeconomic situation. “The four infrastructure projects are the RM100 mil Penang Hill cable car project, RM800 mil Penang International Airport (LTAPP) expansion project, Penang s iconic ferries and the light rail transit (LRT) project. “Because of the withdrawal, we need to find a suitable method to proceed with the projects and are planning to continue the cable car and LRT projects with an alternative form of financing,” he said at a press conference also attended by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Penang DAP secretary, Senator Lim Hui Ying, today. ....

The Transport Minister thanked Lim’s sister, Senator Lim Hui Ying, for agreeing with the Transport and Finance ministries and stated that replacing the decades-old ferries was “a modernisation that could not be avoided” on Dec 17. Hui Ying, in Dewan Negara, had called for the upgrade to be expedited and felt that a one-year time frame would be too long. However, Dr Wee expressed his confusion on Guan Eng’s anger in regards to the Penang ferries services issue. “Hui Ying has clearly mentioned her stance. I don t even understand why her brother is angry with me blindly. “She didn t even argue with the decision to replace the existing ferry with fast boat ferries and vehicle transporters to carry two-wheeler vehicles,” he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Dec 30). ....
GEORGE TOWN: Transport Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong has taken Lim Guan Eng to task for trying to characterise the upgrading of Penang s ferry service on New Year s Day as a cancellation of the service. Wee said although the Federal Government was only striving to take the ferry service to the next level, the DAP secretary general tried to label it as the cancellation of the iconic 126-year-old Penang ferry service . He added that the ferry service was not being cancelled. The Transport Minister said on his Facebook page on Sunday (Dec 27) that the previous Pakatan Harapan government also wanted to replace Penang s ferries, suggesting with catamarans as replacement. ....
