Joe Biden Faces GOP Governor Revolt After Worse Than Expected Jobs Report

A Republican push to end unemployment benefits aimed at helping Americans weather the COVID pandemic is gaining momentum after worse than expected job figures for April.
Even before Friday s release of the meagre 266,000 job gain for last month, GOP governors of Montana and South Carolina had already announced plans to no longer participate in the federal program that gives a $300 weekly boost to jobless benefits.
Economists had predicted more than one million job gains, and Friday s figures cast minds back to one year ago, when in April 2020 the U.S. economy lost 20.5 million jobs, the largest decline since records began. ....

Senator Marshall to introduce bill ending extra unemployment payments

Senator Roger Marshall plans to introduce legislation to end extra federal payments of $300 for people collecting unemployment.
Critics of the extra funding say it’s providing more incentive for people to stay on unemployment, rather than to go back to work. This has been blamed in part for a shortage of workers that many businesses are facing as they reopen. Others say this is only evidence that wages need to be increased across the board.
Senator Marshall issued the following statemen Friday morning:
“Throughout my travels across Kansas I hear constantly how employers are struggling to find people for open jobs because folks are staying at home due to the rich unemployment benefits and the stimulus checks that Democrats continue to enhance. Republican Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas on Saturday said he s just so ready to move on after supporting a GOP effort to block the certification of President Joe Biden s 2020 election win.
In an interview on CNN, anchor Pamela Brown cited a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS which found that 70 percent of Republicans didn t think Biden legitimately won enough votes for the presidency. Only 23 percent of Republicans said Biden did legitimately win enough votes for the presidency. The poll, taken between April 21 and 26, sampled 1,004 U.S. adults by phone. ....
