Energy Bill Details, And Impact On CWLP, Still Murky

By WMAY Newsroom (Mid-West Family Broadcasting) There’s still no word on how a green energy bill might impact the operations of coal-fired power plants for Springfield’s City Water Light and Power and other Downstate utilities. Some lawmakers want to phase out coal-fired plants by 2035… but that would leave CWLP having to buy electricity on the open market while still paying off bonds for a plant that could no longer be used. CWLP and other utilities are calling for a less stringent timeline for phasing out coal plants. State Senator Doris Turner says the negotiations are complex and sensitive and declines to say how she thinks it will all play out.

Today is National Workers Memorial Day

Today, Wednesday, at 5:30 PM, local workers, union officials and community leaders will gather at the Workers Memorial monument located at the northwest corner of the Macon County Courthouse on Wood Street, for a ceremony to honor workers who have died or suffered illness or injuries while on the job. The ceremony will include an honor guard, bagpiper, prayer and the laying of the wreath at the monument.  Senator Doris Turner will be the keynote speaker and Worker Memorial Chair Lloyd Holman will read the names of all Macon County workers who have died on the job. Decatur Trades & Labor Assembly has added three names to the monument this year, including that of Illinois State Trooper Todd Hanneken who died on March 25, 2021 while he was on-duty.

State Armory Building to Receive Nearly $122 Million in Funding

4 days ago in Local Photo: Saga Communications SPRINGFIELD – Through Illinois’ capital plan, nearly $122 million was appropriated to for renovation of the State Armory Building. The administration has released $12.2 million to begin the design and stabilization of the building. The project will be phased with securing and stabilizing the Armory Building as a precursor to follow-on phases of work, which will focus on adaptive re-use of the facility. The initial phase of work provides for inspecting and assessing existing conditions, making recommendations for securing and stabilizing all elements of the building as required to halt deterioration and providing construction documents executing the work.
