Lawmakers are continuing to debate what to do about the statue of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that currently sits across the street from the Statehouse.
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White says the statue doesn’t really look like King, and he has pledged $5,000 of his own money toward creation of a new statue of King, with an eye toward moving it to the Capitol grounds. State Representative Tim Butler of Springfield says another possibility might be a commemoration of King at the State Armory Building across from the Capitol, where King delivered a speech in 1965.
