Republican Lawmakers Want Action After Deadly LaSalle Veterans' Home Outbreak

Republican Lawmakers Want Action After Deadly LaSalle Veterans’ Home Outbreak
State Republican lawmakers want action after a deadly COVID-19 outbreak at LaSalle Veterans’ Home.  Senator Sue Rezin stood outside the Veterans’ Home yesterday stating her outrage at the mass outbreak that killed 36 residents.  Rezin is demanding an independent investigation to ensure the safety of the state’s veterans.  The state Senate Republican has filed four bills she believes will fix problems within the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.  All of the bills are tied up in the Senate Assignments Committee.

Swanson bill looking to boost rural EMT recruitment goes to Senate

April 29, 2021
State Rep. Dan Swanson has sights set on boosting rural EMT recruitment. The Republican from Alpha is sponsoring a bill that allows exceptions to the EMT credentialing process in rural areas. Basically, it would let nurses, physicians assistants and APN’s with active licenses serve as volunteers, and be able to do the same work as certified EMTs. Swanson says, “rural areas often struggle with finding volunteer EMTs but may have several people in their community capable of serving in this capacity if we allow for this efficiency.” Several lawmakers from neighboring districts that are largely rural joined Swanson as co-sponsors, including Reps. C.D. Davidsmeyer, Avery Bourne and Norine Hammond. The Illinois House passed unanimously last Thursday and has been sent to the Senate Assignments Committee. Swanson credits Dahinda/Oak Run Fire District Chief Jack Johnson and Amboy Fire Protection District Chief Jeff Bryant for giving him the idea for this legisl ....

Are ties to marijuana industry a problem for suburban lawmaker seeking CBD rules?

Updated 4/16/2021 6:31 AM
Deerfield Democratic state Rep. Bob Morgan says the CBD Safety Act he sponsored would make consumers safer and would benefit Illinois growers of hemp, the source of many CBD products.
Hemp growers in Illinois disagree, saying HB 147 will hurt them and benefit marijuana companies, which have ties to Morgan and have contributed to his campaign fund.

The bill passed Wednesday in the House in a 96-15 vote.
The bill calls for the prohibition of the sale of CBD products unless the products have undergone lab testing, meet standards developed by the Illinois Department of Agriculture and meet labeling requirements. The legislation would give the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Illinois State Police, sheriff s departments, municipal police and the Illinois Department of Revenue the authority to inspect any CBD manufacturer or distributor for compliance. ....

Capitol Fax.com - Your Illinois News Radar » Doesn't anyone remember the Senate?

Tuesday, Feb 9, 2021
The Illinois Policy Institute has some House rule change ideas. I agree with some, disagree with others, partially agree on a couple. But, interestingly enough, there’s almost no mention of the Senate’s rules, which are nearly identical to the House’s except for term limits, and the new House rules would change that provision, too. Apparently, it’s fine that the Senate has this rule but it’s not nearly enough when it comes to the House…
Like the Senate, the Illinois House Rules should limit the term of the speaker to no more than five General Assemblies, so the state does not have to see generations pass without a change in leadership. There is cause for optimism on this front: term limits for legislative leaders is one reform that made it into the recently proposed House Rules resolution. It’s an important step, but all of the above reforms should be considered to truly ensure that the legislative process is fair. ....
