Most voters probably do not think about who is running the elections they are casting ballots in, but increasingly state lawmakers in New York are scrutinizing the local officials who oversee them. 
Next week, the state Senate will be turning its attention to addressing ways of reforming how elections are run in New York a way of kicking the tires of democracy. 
The hearing is set for next Wednesday, Aug. 4 in Syracuse as the issue of election infrastructure has been called into question and nationalized in a heated partisan environment. ....

LANSING, MI - This week in Lansing was more about molding legislation than passing bills, at least on major topics.
Both chambers made moves to further clarify key initiatives, with budget talks picking up in the House and Senate and amendments made to Senate Republican election bills.
The House continued to tackle ethics reform, while Republicans in both chambers moved to allow high schools to hold in-person commencements. Here’s what happened this week at the Michigan Capitol:

Last year, 13,800 voters showed up to the wrong polling place in their county and their ballots were disqualified. 
Now, state lawmakers want to do so something to solve the problem known as wrong church, wrong pew voting when filling out an affidavit ballot. 
General election data gathered by the group VoteEarlyNY released on Monday found 13,800 ballots were disqualified after voters appeared at the wrong polling site. This translates to a heavy percentage of affidavit ballots being rejected: 32.4% in Erie County, 22.8% in Dutchess County and 21.2% in Ulster County, the group s research found. ....

LANSING, MI - The Michigan House voted to reconfigure election cycles as part of a package of bills approved Tuesday.
The legislation would move August primaries to June and also eliminate regular elections held in May, effective in 2023. The House passed these bills, as well as an expansion of eligible polling places and more election laws during an April 27 session.
The primary election change package consists of four bills sponsored by two Republicans and two Democrats. ....
