INDIANAPOLIS Some bills passed by the 2021 Indiana Legislature remain in legal limbo, including legislation that would allow the General Assembly to call itself into session.
But hundreds of others will become laws starting Thursday on the first day of July.

INDIANAPOLIS â The right to worship in person during an emergency and the expansion of Indiana s Safe Haven Law are among the issues addressed in new laws that take effect July 1.
More than 200 new Indiana laws were approved this year. Sen. Sue Glick, R-LaGrange, highlighted several policies of the many she believes will have a positive impact on communities.
House Enrolled Act 1230 expands Indiana s Safe Haven Law, which, she said, has saved the lives of dozens of newborns by allowing struggling parents to legally turn over custody of their child to medical staff.
Safe Haven 911 provides that due to extenuating circumstances, if a child s parent or a person is unable to give up custody of a child under the procedure set forth in Indiana s Safe Haven Law, the child s parent or the person may request that an emergency medical services provider take custody of the child by dialing the 911 emergency call number and staying with the child until a provider arrives to t ....

A federal judge will decide this week if she will temporarily block a new law aimed at teachers unions. The court heard arguments Tuesday morning on extra steps the state wants to add for teachers to pay union dues.
An attorney for unions told U.S. District Court Judge Sarah Evans Barker a state law passed in April – Senate Enrolled Act 251 – targets teachers unfairly. Unlike unions for other state employees, it makes teachers sign a form each year saying they know they don’t have to join a union. In discussion, Barker called the additional paperwork “onerous” to school districts and said the required language was “probably one-sided.” ....

Teachers Unions Get Tuesday Court Hearing To Halt New Law

Teachers unions will get their day in court Tuesday as they seek an emergency injunction against a law that would change how union dues are deducted. Senate Enrolled Act 251 was signed into law earlier this year, but takes effect July 1.
The new state law adds extra steps for teachers to have union dues automatically deducted from their paychecks, effectively requiring them to opt in each summer. It includes an annual authorization form teachers have to sign which says they know they can decline union membership and its required dues. Unions say it violates constitutional rights to free speech and association. ....
