Florida will not extend work search waiver, rolls out back-to-work initiative

Dane Eagle announced Wednesday that Florida will not extend its work search waiver for the unemployed.
The waiver, implemented during the pandemic’s peak, allowed Floridians to collect unemployment benefits without proving they were searching for a job.
The state will now encourage the unemployed to find work through a new Return to Work program that aims to connect Floridians to jobs and accelerate Florida’s economic rebound.
Eagle said more than 400,000 jobs are available in the Sunshine State. And with ample vaccine supply, he asserted, it’s time to get back to work.
“You’ve seen restaurants that have had to close earlier or open later or close certain days of the week,” Eagle said ....

BISMARCK Gov. Doug Burgum partially vetoed a bill late Friday, May 7, that aims to restrict North Dakota universities from partnering with abortion providers or supporters.
Burgum vetoed the part of Senate Bill 2030 that would penalize any of the state s 11 colleges and universities $2.8 million for such a partnership. He also nixed the portion of the bill that said a person who signs a contract with an abortion-supporting group would ....

There was a time in Texas a long, long time when it was political malpractice for candidates to declare anything other than unflinching fealty to the death penalty.
I recalled that era this week as the Texas House took a significant, if less than sweeping, step in a direction that once might have been scorned by some as soft on crime because it would reduce the pool of miscreants eligible for execution.
