Salome Mwangi
The Idaho Nonprofit Center has announced three members to its board of directors. Salome Mwangi has called Boise home since relocating here 16 years ago via the refugee resettlement program from Nairobi, Kenya. She has a professional background in banking, finance and IT, which she gained while working in Kenya. Since moving to the US, she uses her multilingual skills to foster communication between former refugees and their service providers as they navigated systems in making the Treasure Valley home. Along the way, she has become a cultural broker, realizing that the culture behind each language bears weight in living life with cross-cultural relevance. She currently manages the Refugee Speakers Bureau at the Idaho Office for Refugees.

Public safety pensions remain the city s largest unfunded liability. City Manager Patrick Urich said in 2008, pension payments accounted for 11 percent of the city s operating budget. That s now ballooned to 20 percent with those obligations continuing to mount in the years to come.
